Delivering a CV and cover letter module to Year 10 and 11 students in the North East of England
Stantec's Graduate Civil Engineer Holly Nicholson and Stantec's Civil Engineer Andrew Tweddle from the UK Newcastle office recently delivered the Esh Building my Skills programme module on CV and cover letter writing to approximately 200 students at Wyvern Academy in Darlington and St. Patrick's School in Thornaby.
ESH Building My Skills is a yearlong employability programme which provides students, Year 10 and above, with a rounded introduction to the world of work through timetabled business engagement sessions. All students receive 5 x 1-hour long employability guidance sessions, each delivered by a different business guest who provides insight into their career path, their sector and employability skills they value.
The interactive sessions, which were well received by the students, also gave them an insight into Civil Engineering and will hopefully inspire them to create outstanding CVs and covering letters in preparation for their working lives.
The teachers at Wyvern said that the session was extremely beneficial to the students as this topic (CVs and cover letters) is not covered by the curriculum.
"It was great to see the young people getting involved in the CV workshop and sounding enthusiastic about their futures. There was a great variation in the students: some knew exactly what they wanted to do when they are older and some had no idea, but the session provided useful skills to all of them. I've really enjoyed being able to give back to some local students and passing on some of the tips I've learned for writing a powerful CV." – Holly Nicholson, Graduate Civil Engineer
