Practical activities and problem solving exercises to avoid getting infected by the zombie virus!

For the past three years, Stantec has helped to facilitate ‘Women in Engineering day’ for Year 7 girls at Newminster Middle School in Morpeth, UK. The aim of the day is to highlight female role models in the engineering industry and to inspire and motivate the girls to pursue a career in science, maths and other related subjects.

This year’s event was held on Monday 11 June and was hosted by Stantec's Project Engineering Fritha Bevin-McCrimmon, Stantec's Graduate Engineer Holly Nicholson, volunteers from the ICE and three volunteers from Newcastle University, James Hewitson, Matthew Day and Martin Jolley.

Fritha delivered a ‘Zombie Apocalypse’ fun-filled day where the students carried out a range of practical activities and problem solving exercises to avoid getting infected by the zombie virus!

The girls started their morning with route planning to reach Survivors Island, taking care to avoid any zombies that got in their way. The girls also looked at different energy sources and how they’d use energy to power Survivors Island.

Next up was the water purification challenge where the girls used a variety of tools to filter out green food colouring, flour and oats from the zombie infested water. The team who has the cleanest water were crowned the winners.

Finally, the students were challenged to build a 12m long cable stayed bridge to reach Survivors Island.

This fantastic hands-on bridge building activity provided by the ICE enabled the students to experience civil engineering first hand. The girls also learnt about the importance of team work and communication, as well as learning about types of bridges, different materials, and civil engineering projects local to them.

The school stated that the girls really enjoyed having face to face contact with positive female role models and thoroughly enjoyed the bridge building activity and the zombie-themed exercises.
